Tight Finish in Ocean Race Europe: Herrmann Falls Short by a Narrow Margin - Racing Event Ocean Europe: Herrmann Finishes Second Following Heartbeat Decision
In a nail-biting conclusion to the second leg of the Ocean Race Europe, Boris Herrmann's team Malizia fought valiantly against challenging conditions to secure a hard-earned second place. The 1,400-nautical-mile race from Portsmouth to Cartagena tested the resilience of all teams, with Malizia battling through the English Channel, Bay of Biscay, a fly-by in Portugal, and the Mediterranean final push.
The race saw Team Malizia, skippered by Will Harris, finish with a lead of 7 minutes and 24 seconds over Yoann Richomme's "Paprec Arkéa". This was achieved after a clever maneuver in the final sprint, which secured their second place position.
The race was a close contest, with "Malizia - Seaexplorer" finishing in Portsmouth after 3 days, 21 hours, 54 minutes, and 50 seconds. The French team Biotherm, led by skipper Paul Meilhat, dominated this leg, showing impressive boat speed, especially as winds lightened.
However, the race was not without its dramas. The collision between "Holcim-PRB" and "Allagrande Mapei Racing" occurred less than two minutes after the stage start in Kiel. Both teams are now preparing for their departure from Kiel later in the day, with skipper Rosalin Kuiper of "Holcim-PRB" expressing optimism about getting the boat ready in time for the second leg.
The first leg of the Ocean Race Europe was won by the French team Biotherm, led by skipper Paul Meilhat, who finished the approximately 900 nautical miles in 3 days, 19 hours, 58 minutes, and 30 seconds.
The second leg of the Ocean Race Europe starts in Portsmouth on Sunday evening, with the race course extending across the North Sea. The damaged yachts from the first leg are reportedly ready for action, making for an exciting and competitive race ahead.
