Racing cyclo-cross on Friday nights: An exploration of the London cyclists bucking weekend norms during their twenties

The MAAP and Herne Hill Velodrome's Summercross series has become a popular summer event in London, transforming the traditional cyclo-cross races into a lively, festive celebration. Held annually in July and early August, the series takes place around the city's only outdoor velodrome, offering a unique blend of racing and social events.

Located at the historic Herne Hill Velodrome, which is over a century old, the Summercross series is a relatively recent innovation. Partly hosted by the Australian cycling apparel brand, MAAP, and partly by the velodrome, the event aims to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all kinds of cyclists. Unlike many other cyclo-cross events, no British Cycling license is required to compete in the Summercross series.

Emily Stainer, a regular spectator and budding cyclo-cross racer, described the event as a fun spectator sport that is welcoming and community-oriented. She supported racers based on who she thought would benefit from moral support and who seemed to be enjoying themselves. The velodrome was loud with the sound of clanging bells, cheers, and spectators grabbing food and drinks during the races.

The Summercross series has been successful in encouraging new riders, particularly women, to participate in cyclo-cross, a predominantly male discipline. Herne Hill Velodrome is responsible for handling the timing, course preparation, and overall management of the series.

Looking ahead, the event's organizers aim to maintain the friendly, community-driven vibe without aiming for major growth. The focus remains on gathering people to watch or race, share drinks, and enjoy good music at the velodrome. With plans for the 2026 series already being made, details will only be revealed at the velodrome.

The MAAP and Herne Hill Velodrome's Summercross series has been attracting a devoted and growing community of cycling fans. Increased online presence and word of mouth are contributing to its growing popularity. The series offers a unique and accessible experience for both racers and spectators, making it a must-attend event for cycling enthusiasts in London.
