In a dramatic turn of events during the finale of Tour de France stage 17, a significant crash occurred about 1 km before the finish line, reducing the group contesting the sprint finish. Jonathan Milan emerged victorious from this much smaller group, winning the stage.

However, the focus was not solely on the race's outcome. An intruder, dressed in cycling gear and riding a black bike, attempted to ride through the finish line area, causing a disturbance. A quick-thinking police officer tackled the man to the ground, preventing any potential disruption to the close sprint finish already affected by the crash.

The crash had a major impact on the composition of the sprint, implying that several riders were likely delayed or impacted by it. Among them were Louis Barre, Biniam Girmay, and Hugo Page. Girmay, of Intermarche-Wanty, came down in a heavy fall just under the one-kilometer-to-go marker. Two other teammates of Girmay also came down but escaped unscathed from the incident.

The most significant casualty of the crash was Carlos Rodriquez of Ineos Grenadiers. Rodriquez, who was the team's best-placed rider in 10th position in the general classification, was able to finish stage 17 after remounting his bike. However, he was forced to withdraw from the Tour de France due to a pelvis fracture, confirmed by hospital tests on Wednesday evening. Ineos Grenadiers announced his withdrawal on Thursday morning, stating that Rodriquez is in good spirits and under the close supervision of their medical team.

Girmay, on the other hand, sustained superficial injuries but no fractures or serious injuries were detected. His team is closely monitoring his recovery.

Thymen Arensman, winner of stage 14 to Superbagnères, is in 14th position for Ineos Grenadiers, but he is still well outside the top ten.

The Tour de France continues on Thursday with the first of two summit finishes in the high Alps.
