Racing community laments the tragic demise of 19-year-old Samuele Privitera following a collision during a competition
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the cycling community was left in mourning following the death of 19-year-old Italian under-23 cyclist Samuele Privitera during the Giro della Valle d'Aosta. The race, which began on July 14 and was scheduled to conclude on July 18, was marred by the unfortunate incident that occurred on July 16 during the first stage in Pontey, northwest Italy.
Privitera, a member of the Hagens Berman Jayco development team, was participating in his second season with the team. Known for his joy, spirit, and kindness, he had made a significant impact within the team and the cycling community at large.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation by public safety authorities, but it is known that the crash took place during a descent in the race. Despite being revived at the scene by emergency services, Privitera later succumbed to his injuries at the Ospedale Parini hospital in Aosta.
In the wake of this tragedy, the organizers of the Giro della Valle d'Aosta cancelled stage two of the five-day race out of respect. The event is set to resume on Friday with a moment's silence in honor of Privitera, followed by a neutralized start. Teams have been given the freedom to decide whether to continue the race from the third stage.
The cycling world has expressed its condolences for the loss of Privitera. Axel Merckx, the owner and general manager of Hagens Berman Jayco, described Privitera as the life and personality of the team. Tadej Pogačar and Bradley Wiggins are among those who have paid tribute to Privitera on social media.
