Hamburg Cyclassics 2025: Rory Townsend Secures Surprising Victory

In a thrilling turn of events at the 28th edition of the Hamburg Cyclassics, also known as the ADAC Cyclassics 2025, Rory Townsend of Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team emerged as the unexpected winner. The race, held on August 17, 2025, was a 207-kilometer journey from Buxtehude to Hamburg, marking the first time the Cyclassics started in Lower Saxony [1][2].

The race began with a four-man break consisting of Townsend, Dries De Pooter, Johan Jacobs, and Nelson Oliveira. This group maintained a lead for much of the race before Townsend secured a narrow victory in a thrilling finish ahead of Arnaud De Lie and Paul Magnier [3].

One of the notable favorites, Wout van Aert, stepped in to replace the ill defending champion Olav Kooij. Despite not claiming the top spot, van Aert finished strongly among the top riders, surprising several international cycling stars, including himself [4][5].

The race was the longest in the past five years and was held together with Frankfurt-Eschborn. Numerous streets in and around Hamburg were closed for the event, and the professionals passed several Hamburg landmarks such as the Köhlbrand Bridge, Elbe beach, Jungfernstieg, Reeperbahn, and Waseberg, five times during the race [2].

While Townsend's victory marked the first UCI World Tour win for Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, it also marked a decade since the last German victory at the Cyclassics, achieved by André Greipel [6]. Unfortunately, no German rider made it into the top ten this year [7].

In addition to the professional race, approximately 10,000 amateur cyclists participated in the event on two different courses [8]. Phil Bauhaus, a sprinter, had a close call around 50 kilometers from the finish, crashing but managing to continue [9].

Notably, van Aert secured a prestigious stage win on the Champs-Élysées at the Tour de France earlier this year [10]. The Hamburg Cyclassics 2025 was a memorable event, with its unexpected winner and the exciting competition it offered.
