Racer Russell is returning to compete in qualifying races in Montreal for Formula 1.
In a stunning turn of events, George Russell, the 27-year-old British racer, snatched the pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix. This unexpected triumph came after a mesmerizing lap in Montreal, clocking an impressive 1:10.899 minutes. The race is set to take place on Sunday (20:00 CET, Sky and RTL), with fingers crossed for his first Formula 1 season victory.
In second place, close on Russell's heels, is Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, who wowed in the Red Bull. The championship leader, Oscar Piastri, rounded out the top three in the McLaren.
Germany's one and only driver in the field, Nico Hülkenberg, managed to secure 13th place, but due to a penalty for Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda, Hülkenberg will start from 12th. Remember the surprising fifth place finish he snagged two weeks ago in Barcelona, scoring plenty of points for his Sauber team? Well, it's a testament to his prowess behind the wheel.
As we head into the tenth of 24 races this season, Australian Piastri leads the standings, maintaining a 10-point advantage over his teammate Lando Norris, who qualified seventh. Verstappen, though trailing behind by 49 points, has a knack for Montreal, having clinched victory there three years in a row between 2020-2022.
The 2023 Canadian Grand Prix race records don't specify Verstappen's pole position or fastest lap time during qualifying, but he's known for his dominance on the track. In the midst of controversies following his crash in the previous race in Spain, he was slapped with three penalty points on his license due to an intentional collision with Russell's car. Another point would land him a race ban for the next World Championship round in Austria. Verstappen, in true form, has already announced he won't be changing his driving style.
