Racecourse Groundstaff in Newbury recognized as one of the top three winners at the Racecourse Awards, with teams commending the results amidst the 'extraordinarily dry summer'.
The Racecourse Groundstaff Awards for 2025 have recognised the exceptional work of several tracks, with Newbury, Kelso, and Newmarket emerging as the top contenders for the groundstaff champion title at the 14th annual RCA Showcase Awards, to be held at York on November 13.
Newbury, the Berkshire track, was named dual-purpose winner at the Racecourse Groundstaff Awards. George Hill, the clerk of the course, received the recognition on behalf of his team after a busy year. The team is proud to receive this award, with everyone involved, from full-time to part-time staff, recognised for their efforts to improve the racing surface for each race meeting.
Newmarket was crowned the Flat winners, while Kelso landed the jumps category. Andrew Morris, the clerk of the course at Newmarket, was recognised for the balancing demands of both the Rowley Mile and July course during an incredibly dry summer.
The Ayr Gold Cup is known for producing surprise winners in the wide-open handicap. However, the selection process for the Racecourse Groundstaff Awards was no less competitive. An industry panel, including members of the Professional Jockeys Association, BHA, and National Trainers Federation, made the final decision.
In addition to the groundstaff awards, several individuals were honoured. The Special Merit award was given to Karl Coghlin of Haydock. Daniel Haynes from Huntingdon received the Richard Linley award, and the Neil Wyatt Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Andrew Malam of Bangor and Chester.
Dale Gibson from the PJA acknowledged the tireless work of countless groundstaff in producing a safe and effective racing surface for horses and jockeys. He emphasised the significance of maintaining a consistent racing surface, which is of significant importance for all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Dylan Browne McMonagle is set for a winter stint, while Hollie Doyle is excited for the Hong Kong challenge after a stop-start year. The World Pool is also set for a major expansion, with the Hong Kong Jockey Club boss asking partners to contribute more to marketing and welfare.
