Race Victory Secured by Norris Amidst Frustration from Piastri and Surprise Performance by Hulkenberg
In a dramatic turn of events at the 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Oscar Piastri's 10-second penalty for braking erratically behind the safety car during a chaotic restart on lap 21 had a critical impact on the race's outcome.
Piastri, who had taken the lead, was penalised for a move deemed unsafe as Max Verstappen, running directly behind, had to swerve to avoid Piastri's sudden deceleration. This raised concerns from both competitors and race stewards.
As a result, Piastri lost the lead when he had to serve the time during a pit stop, allowing his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, to overtake him and ultimately win the race. Piastri finished second after the penalty drop, visibly frustrated by the decision, which he felt was unfair given the wet conditions and a late safety car call.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown described the situation as “a close one,” suggesting that the combination of wet weather, telemetry discrepancies, and Verstappen’s acceleration contributed to the misunderstanding. Piastri even asked McLaren for team orders to regain the lead after serving his penalty but acknowledged that it would have been unfair to Norris to swap positions under those circumstances.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, who started on pole position, spun out of contention, finishing fifth. Lewis Hamilton came fourth, while George Russell bagged the final point for Mercedes. This was Norris' fourth win of the season.
Other notable finishes included Lance Stroll in seventh for Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso in ninth for their home team, and Nico Hulkenberg in third for an unnamed team. The race also saw incidents such as Isack Hadjar crashing his Racing Bulls into the back of Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes in heavy spray, triggering the safety car to return again on lap 22.
The virtual safety car was triggered twice during the race due to Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto's gearbox problem and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto spinning into the gravel. The full safety car bunched up the field again on lap 14 due to heavier rain and more treacherous conditions, and stayed out for three laps.
Pierre Gasly finished sixth for Alpine, rounding off a thrilling and unpredictable race at Silverstone.
