Record-Breaking Performances at the 2025 Leadville 100
In a thrilling display of endurance and determination, Anne Flower and David Roche shattered the records at the Leadville 100, a renowned ultra-marathon known for its grueling terrain and high altitude.
Anne Flower, a 35-year-old runner from Chattanooga, Tennessee, made her debut in the 100-mile race at Leadville this year. Despite the challenging elevation and weather conditions, she managed to break the 31-year-old women's record held by Ann Trason, finishing the race in an impressive time of 17:58:19[1][4]. Flower placed second overall in the race, just behind David Roche.
David Roche, a 37-year-old runner from Colorado, repeated his victory from 2024. He not only defended his men's course record but also improved it significantly, lowering his 2024 record by over 14 minutes[1][2][3][5]. Roche finished the race in an astonishing time of 15:12:30, averaging an impressive 9:07 per mile on the high-altitude, 100-mile course with over 15,000 feet of elevation gain[1][2][3][5].
The Leadville 100 course is notorious for its difficulty, climbing to nearly 12,500 feet at Hope Pass[2][5]. These performances by Anne Flower and David Roche are considered landmark achievements in ultrarunning at Leadville.
Other notable performances included Lea Mulligan, who placed ninth overall with a time of 20:39:04, and Justin Grunewald, who took second place and third overall with a time of 18:06:34[1]. Pat Cade, a Leadville local and Lake County High School cross country coach, also had a strong showing, placing third overall in a time of 18:25:23[1].
David Roche had joined the Leadville 100 race last minute, and his plans to win the Western States race were dashed[6]. Despite this, he managed to make a strong comeback and set a new standard for the Leadville 100.
Anne Flower's performance at the Leadville 100 follows a series of challenges for runner Justin Grunewald, who had DNFs this year at Canyons Endurance Runs and Arc of Attrition by UTMB[7].
