Race intensifies in the concluding part of The Maze Runner Series, titled Maze Runner: The Death Cure
In the thrilling conclusion to the Maze Runner trilogy, 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure', Thomas (played by Dylan O'Brien) leads a group of survivors on a mission to take down WCKD, the World Catastrophe Killzone Department, in their final stronghold.
The film's backdrop, the last city, was beautifully captured in the southern cape of Cape Town, with its tall buildings and modern architecture, providing a perfect setting for the dystopian world. The production team also filmed at Koel Bay and the Kogel Bay Beach Resort, transforming these locations into the safe haven for the survivors.
Cape Town, named the World Design Capital in 2014, offered a unique blend of urban and coastal landscapes, contributing to the film's visual appeal. The filmmakers and cast members were particularly drawn to the city's distinct mix of glass and steel, as described by director Wes Ball.
The story unfolds in a mysterious encampment called The Glade, surrounded by an ever-changing maze with 200 foot walls. When Thomas and Teresa arrived, everything began to change in The Glade. Vince, a leader of the Right Arm resistance, is tasked with shepherding the growing number of young people to the safe haven.
The battle against WCKD actually started at the end of 'Scorch Trials', where the Gladers discovered other mazes and survivors, and learned of the organization that had selected them, WCKD. Dr. Ava Paige, the director of operations for WCKD, oversees the experiments on the Gladers and aims to find a cure for the Flare virus, even if it means sacrificing the Immunes, as revealed in the final confrontation where her true motives are exposed.
One of the film's most memorable scenes is the opening train sequence, shot near the town of Upington, at the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Actor Berry Pepper described filming the train heist scene as one of the highlights of the shoot, despite the extreme heat.
Actor Dylan O'Brien described the opening sequence as one of the coolest sequences they've ever done and a great way to kick off the film. The goal of the inhabitants of The Glade is to escape the glade by solving the maze. The ultimate goal in 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure' is to get everyone to the safe haven, a place that was first introduced in 'The Scorch Trials'.
James Dashner's novel 'The Maze Runner', published in October 2009, became a New York Times Best Seller and broke box-office records. The film adaptation of 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure' promises to deliver an action-packed conclusion to this popular series.
