Ireland's Top Finishers in the 2021 Volta ao Algarve
In the 2021 edition of the Volta ao Algarve, Irish riders put up a strong showing. Tony Martin, a seasoned veteran at 37 years old, finished the final stage in the second place, just 37 seconds behind the winner, Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar.
Martin's consistent performance throughout the race earned him the same position in the overall standings. However, he ended up 3 minutes and 3 seconds behind Pogačar, who claimed the overall victory with a total time of 19:02:43.
Bradley Wiggins, another British rider, won the final stage of the race, a 25.8km time trial. Despite his impressive performance, Wiggins finished the overall race in third place, 7 seconds behind Martin and 3 minutes and 16 seconds behind Pogačar.
Nicolas Roche also had a commendable performance, finishing the Volta ao Algarve in 14th place overall. His teammate, Philip Deignan, ended the race in 34th place. Unfortunately, Deignan had a disappointing final stage, finishing 2 minutes and 51 seconds off the pace.
