Race driver Oliver Bearman faces severe consequences in Baku, Azerbaijan, potentially receiving the harshest penalty in Formula One.
Oliver Bearman, the young Sauber driver, finds himself in a precarious position in the Formula 1 2025 season, facing a potential racing ban due to accumulated penalty points. The British racer currently leads the drivers' penalty list with ten of the twelve allowed points.
The latest addition to Bearman's tally came from a collision with Carlos Sainz at Monza, for which he received two penalty points. However, unlike in a similar case in Monza where Gabriel Bortoleto, a Sauber driver, was acquitted, Bearman did not actively communicate on the radio during the Monaco incident, which may have complicated his case.
The penalties have been a source of frustration for Bearman, who admits to making a dangerous mistake in Silverstone that led to a penalty. He believes that choosing a different narrative on the radio during the Monaco incident might have helped him avoid penalty points.
Bearman feels he could have employed more political savvy to make life easier with the race stewards. He acknowledges his responsibility for the penalties but disagrees with the racing rules. The penalty points from Monaco sting the most for Bearman as he felt he had done everything to avoid a dangerous situation.
The threat of the next penalty has led Bearman to rethink his approach for the race in Baku this weekend. He has decided to avoid risks in Formula 1 races to prevent further penalties. However, this strategy could limit his chances of fighting for World Championship points.
In a recent case involving Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson, Williams was successful with a 'Right of Review' to challenge a penalty. However, Bearman's own team, Haas, did not submit such a request for his Monza penalty because the application had to be made within four days of the incident, and that deadline had passed.
Interestingly, Bortoleto overtook another car immediately after the red flag was waved but avoided punishment. This may have set a precedent that Bearman could have potentially used to overturn his Monza penalty, but that option is no longer available.
Despite the challenges, Bearman feels he has been treated unfairly due to the penalties. He is hoping for a clean race in Baku and a chance to redeem himself in the Formula 1 circuit.
