Parties - Raab Steps Down from SWR Panel Due to Missteps
Heike Raab, Rhineland-Palatinate's media representative and SPD member, has taken responsibility for her errors and left her position as SWR's Deputy Chair of the Board of Directors. In a recent statement, Raab acknowledged that she should have raised her concerns over the SWR report of April 11 directly with relevant committees rather than sending a letter.
"From hindsight and considering the recent discussions, I willingly acknowledge my missteps in not addressing my factual criticisms of the SWR report directly," Raab said in her statement, which was released on Thursday. "There was never an intention to exert pressure. I deeply regret that I may have given the impression that I did so," she continued.
Raab had mailed a letter, carrying the state government's letterhead, to Rheinland-Palatinate's SWR state broadcasting director, Ulla Fiebig. The letter criticized a SWR television broadcast that featured an SWR political correspondent, touching on the political fate of SPD politician Roger Lewentz, who resigned as Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister following the Ahr Valley flood disaster.
In her role, Raab serves as a federal government representative, a European representative, and the media representative for Rhineland-Palatinate. She also serves as the Broadcasting Commission coordinator for the federal states and is a prominent figure in German media politics. As a state representative, she is a part of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Broadcasting Council.
"I now realize that I underestimated the influence due to my special role in media policy," Raab said in her statement. "Using the title 'authorized representative' in the letterhead was a mistake that I regret. I now apologize for this," she emphasized.
"My commitment to free and independent media is unwavering. That's why I want to eliminate any doubts and have, therefore, resigned from my post on the SWR Board of Directors," she stated.
