Quick Methods to Escape from Jail in Monopoly: 5 Enjoyable and Speedy Approaches

Monopoly, the classic board game, has seen several updates over the years, but the rules regarding getting out of jail remain unchanged in the 2025 version.

In the game, players can get out of jail by paying a $50 fine, rolling doubles within three turns, or using a "Get Out of Jail Free" card from Chance or Community Chest. If a player fails to roll doubles within three turns while in jail, they must pay the $50 fine to get out. This is consistent with the traditional official rules and no new legislative changes or house rules mentioned in the 2025 updates explicitly alter this aspect.

Players can pay the $50 fine by handing $50 in Monopoly money to the Banker before making their dice roll. Starting February 24, 2025, new Monopoly rules will allow players to use either paper money or digital currency (Monopoly Go cash) when paying to leave jail.

The "Get Out of Jail Free" card can be used by announcing its use before rolling dice or paying fines, and handing the card to the Banker. Only two "Get Out of Jail Free" cards exist (one in each deck). These cards are valuable for trading with other players but cannot be sold to the Bank.

In the late game, staying put in jail can protect you from huge rent payments. If your opponents own full sets like Boardwalk or Park Place, staying put for three turns inside jail can protect you from huge rent payments. Early in the game, getting out quickly helps players buy key properties like Boardwalk.

After playing the "Get Out of Jail Free" card, return it to its original deck so another player can gain it later by landing on a matching space. Place your token on the Just Visiting space next to Jail as soon as you play the card, just like if you paid to get out.

In summary, the traditional interplay of jail time and fine in Monopoly remains in place in the 2025 version. Rolling doubles offers a free way out of jail and saves cash for more important plays later as property values increase. The new Monopoly rules in 2025 do not change the existing rule regarding paying the $50 fine to get out of jail.
