Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Competition Heats Up Ahead of Preseason Opener

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for their preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on August 7, 2025, and the quarterback position is shrouded in uncertainty. The team's depth chart lists both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones as starters, with their names separated by an "OR", indicating a fierce competition for the starting role.

Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, started 15 games through his first two professional seasons. However, his sophomore campaign was marred by inconsistency, as he completed just 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards and eight touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 499 yards and six touchdowns.

Last season, Richardson was placed on injured reserve with an AC joint sprain in October 2023 and required surgery. Joe Flacco replaced him as the starting quarterback for the Colts after Richardson completed just 44.4% of his passes through six games.

Despite the setbacks, Colts coach Shane Steichen announced that Richardson would start and play about 1.5 quarters in the preseason opener, with Daniel Jones planned to enter afterward. However, Richardson left early in the first quarter due to a hard sack, and Jones took over the quarterback duties.

Meanwhile, Daniel Jones brings a wealth of experience to the competition. He started 69 games in six seasons with the New York Giants, throwing for 14,582 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career. The Colts signed him to a one-year, $14 million deal to compete for the starting quarterback position.

In the latter half of 2024, Jones was a backup for the Minnesota Vikings. Now, he finds himself in a new opportunity with the Colts, aiming to revive his NFL career in 2025.

The quarterback competition between Richardson and Jones is closely watched, as both are aiming to lead the Colts' offense and secure a long-term future in the league. The Colts have not decided on a starting quarterback for the preseason game against the Ravens, and coach Shane Steichen has not informed his team which quarterback will lead the offense.

As the preseason game approaches, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how the competition unfolds and which quarterback will emerge as the clear-cut starter for the Colts.
