Earthquake Chaos in Naples - Scared City Survives with Minor Woes

Quake Near Naples Induces Fear: Modest Harm and Wounds Reported

Let's chat! Shaken to the core, the folks of Naples are battling their fears after a 4.4 magnitude quake rocked their city in the wee hours of Thursday. YouTube and Twitter blew up with footage and pics of automobiles smothered in rubble, buildings sporting deep fissures, and people scattering the streets with wide-eyed terror.

The destructive shakedown took place in the Phlegraean Fields, some 20 kilometers far west of Naples, burrowing 2.5 kilometers deep below Mother Earth, courtesy of the Italian Institute for Volcanology (INGV). The tremor hit around 1:25 AM, followed by another measuring 1.6 at 1:40 AM, and an additional four aftershocks.

One woman was hurt severely as a ceiling crashed down upon her, while numerous others sustained glass cuts due to shattered windows, disclosed Naples' mayor, Gaetano Manfredi. In total, 11 people were taken to the hospital—with some admissions due to anxiety frenzy, informed the mayor.

Keep reading to learn about the trembling Phlegraean Fields, a supervolcano with a diameter of 15 x 12 km. While no significant damage has been accounted for at present, schools in the affected region remained shuttered on Thursday for precautionary measures. Due to the quake, many residents were compelled to spend the rest of the Thursday night amid emergency shelters.

Manfredi described the tremor as "extraordinarily intense," owing to the epicenter's proximity to Naples compared to the last big quake in May of 2024. Inspecting the damages, numerous residents attempted seeking shelter on the premises of a defunct NATO base in Bagnoli. "There was an instant of panic, but then all settled down," explained the mayor, assuring things were "under control." Although a church tower in Bagnoli bears minor damages, news of property destruction has been reported in other areas as well.

The Phlegraean Fields is a supervolcano with alarming consequences—an eruption 40,000 years ago contributed to global climate shifts. Despite the densely populated area surrounding the Phlegraean Fields experiencing earthquakes regularly, scientists generally agree that an eruption in the near future is unlikely.

Stay tuned for further updates and stay safe, Neapolitans!
