Qatar Grand Prix enforces two-pit-stop rule, reshaping race tactics
The upcoming Qatar Grand Prix will introduce a mandatory two-pit-stop rule for safety, forcing teams to rethink their race strategies at the Lusail International Circuit. The event, held under floodlights in late November, promises cool desert nights and stable track conditions.
The race will take place in hot but dry conditions, with clear skies and consistent track temperatures. These factors reduce tire wear, allowing drivers to push harder over longer stints. However, the new rule limits each stint to a maximum of 25 laps per set of tires.
Teams now face a choice between two main strategies. The first involves starting on medium tires, switching to another set of mediums, and finishing on softs. Pit stops for this approach are expected between laps 21-25 and 40-46. A second option uses a medium-hard-medium sequence, with earlier stops compared to the first plan.
For drivers starting outside the top 10, a different tactic could work better. Beginning on hard tires before switching to mediums twice in the final stints may offer an edge. Despite the stricter rules, teams still have free tire selection across all three planned stops.
The two-pit-stop requirement adds a new layer of planning for teams. Strategies will likely be more uniform than in previous races, but small adjustments could still make a difference. With stable conditions and controlled tire wear, the race will test both speed and precision in execution.
