Pyongyang's first marathon in six years commences in North Korea.

In a surprising turn of events, North Korea is all set to host its first Pyongyang International Marathon in six years! After keeping its borders sealed during the pandemic, the reclusive nation welcomes foreign runners to participate in this long-awaited event.

Participants from China, Romania, and other countries have already arrived in North Korea to join the festivities, as reported by state media KCNA news agency and Rodong Sinmun on Sunday. Runners from overseas have been practicing at a hotel in Pyongyang to get ready for the big day, according to Simon Cockerell, the general manager at Beijing-based Koryo Tours – the official partners of the Pyongyang Marathon.

According to sources, approximately 200 travelers flew into Pyongyang over the weekend, preparing for the anticipated Sunday race. Koryo Tours, which assisted international visitors in registering for the event, shared instances of the streets and recreational areas of Pyongyang on Instagram, hinting at the preparations underway.

While North Korea shut its borders in 2020 due to the pandemic, it has gradually lifted restrictions since 2023, allowing some Russian tourist groups to enter the country. However, the capital of Pyongyang remains closed to regular tourism.

The marathon will be a return course, taking runners through central Pyongyang, highlighting Pyongyang's iconic landmarks, venturing into the countryside, and concluding back in a stadium surrounded by 50,000 cheering locals. The marathon is an annual event that celebrates the birthday of North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung, and his grandson, current leader Kim Jong Un.

Despite the laid-back atmosphere of the marathon, it is essential for foreign runners to adhere to local regulations, etiquette, safety, and practicalities when traveling to North Korea. Pre-trip briefings are held to ensure participants are well-informed and ready for their unique experience in Pyongyang.
