PWHL reveals forward of the year finalists as playoffs heat up

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has announced the finalists for its forward of the year award. Kelly Pannek, Taylor Heise, and Brianne Jenner are in contention for the honour. The winner will be revealed at the league’s awards ceremony in Detroit on June 16.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Charge faces elimination in the Walter Cup championship series, trailing Montreal Victoire two games to one. Kelly Pannek dominated the league’s third season, finishing top in both points (33) and goals (16). She is only the second player to achieve this double, following Natalie Spooner’s feat in 2024. Pannek’s strong performance earned her a spot among the award finalists.

Taylor Heise also had an impressive season, recording 30 points, including 13 goals. She set a PWHL record with six multi-assist games in a single campaign. Her consistency made her a standout candidate for the forward of the year title.

Brianne Jenner, representing the Ottawa Charge, contributed 12 goals and 14 points in 30 games. She played a crucial role in securing the team’s fourth and final playoff spot, adding three goals and four assists in the last four matches of the regular season. Last year’s winner, Marie-Philip Poulin, is not among this year’s finalists, having previously beaten Sarah Fillier and Hilary Knight to the award.

The awards ceremony takes place as the Walter Cup finals continue. Ottawa now battles to stay alive against Montreal, with Game 4 approaching. Hilary Knight, another top forward, spent this season with the Seattle Torrent. The PWHL will name its forward of the year on June 16 in Detroit. The ceremony comes during a critical moment in the championship series, with Ottawa fighting to extend its season. The winner will join a select group of players recognised for their impact on the league.
