Putin's aggressive actions are emboldened by the US's silence, Zelensky asserts following a massive Russian assault

In the wake of a destructive overnight assault on May 25, President Volodymyr Zelensky underscored the need for enhanced economic sanctions against Russia, asserting that international apathy toward the conflict only encourages Russian President Vladimir Putin. The attack, which claimed the lives of 12 individuals, including three children, and injured over 60, was carried out by at least 69 missiles and 298 drones, according to Ukraine's Air Force.

Multiple Ukrainian villages and cities became the focus of rescue efforts following the large-scale attack, Zelensky reported. The Air Force documented more than 22 direct strikes, with further harm reported in neighboring regions due to debris.

Upon a Telegram post on May 25, Zelensky emphasized the significance of assertive pressure on the Russian leadership to halt the brutality. He stated, "Without strong sanctions, this violence cannot be controlled." He continued, "The world is well aware of Russia's economic vulnerabilities. We can end this conflict, but only through targeted pressure on Russia. Putin must prioritize ending the war instead of launching attacks."

Previous direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials held in Istanbul on May 16 ended without achieving a ceasefire agreement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later confirmed Moscow's disinterest in agreeing to a ceasefire in Ukraine, stating on May 21 that Russia "no longer desires this."

The continuous conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which intensified with significant attacks in May 2022, remains a focal point of international policy and military responses. In addition to military support and diplomatic pressure from key Western countries, the EU, and NATO, Western governments aim to pressure Russia through targeted sanctions and public critiques of Russia's war narratives and human rights abuses.

In response, Russia has cultivated a domestic propaganda and nationalist rhetoric, reinforcing a militarized, anti-Western ideology. The Kremlin also seeks to dissuade Western states from providing military aid to Ukraine, framing such actions as a dangerous escalation. Ongoing international efforts include the documentation and prosecution of Russian war crimes and humanitarian aid for affected populations.

  2. The ongoing conflict, with escalations such as the large-scale attack on May 25, has been met with targeted sanctions and public critiques from Western governments, while Russia responds with domestic propaganda and nationalist rhetoric, further intensifying the crime-and-justice aspect and the tension between the two nations.
