Putin-Trump encounter not arranged at present; Lavrov and Rubio engaged in conversation instead

The diplomatic landscape between Russia and the United States has been a topic of interest in recent weeks, with key figures from both nations engaging in discussions aimed at resolving ongoing international issues.

On July 10, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during ASEAN ministerial meetings in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting, described as "productive and frank" by the Russian Foreign Ministry, covered a range of topics including the situations in Ukraine, Iran, Syria, and other international issues. Both sides expressed a desire to find peaceful solutions and restore economic and humanitarian cooperation.

Pompeo noted that the US had heard new proposals on Ukraine during the meeting. However, as of early August 2025, there is no publicly available information indicating that a specific "roadmap" for resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict was discussed in Kuala Lumpur. It's worth mentioning that a separate meeting involving Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was reported in July, where they discussed peace talks and new ideas for a roadmap, but Pompeo was not referenced in that context.

In another development, the US is working with Congress on legislation for new sanctions against Russia. Pompeo added that the President needs flexibility in how and when these sanctions can be imposed to give leverage in any negotiations. The US administration is also reportedly discussing tougher sanctions against Russia.

Meanwhile, Russia and the US agreed in April to develop a "roadmap" for the return of six Russian diplomatic properties seized by American authorities. The status of this roadmap is not currently known.

On a personal level, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump have not planned a meeting. Pompeo described his conversation with Lavrov as "frank and important." The Kremlin, too, described the conversation as "frank." However, Trump expressed dissatisfaction, noting that he "did not achieve any progress."

In a separate matter, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mikhail Bogdanov has been removed from his post, as reported by DK.RU. This change in Russian leadership may potentially impact the ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two nations.

Lastly, Ukraine has unveiled a NATO-based air force roadmap to enhance its aviation capabilities amid ongoing conflict. This roadmap is unrelated to any direct Russia-US diplomat peace negotiation roadmap.

As the diplomatic dance between Russia and the US continues, the search for a peaceful resolution to various international issues remains a priority for both nations.

  1. The discussion between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in July included a focus on potential migration due to the ongoing war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, as the US had heard new proposals regarding the situation.
  2. The policy-and-legislation aspect of US-Russia relations is currently centered on new sanctions against Russia, with the US administration seeking flexibility in imposing these sanctions.
  3. General news outlets have reported on the impact of changes in Russian leadership, such as the removal of Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, on the ongoing diplomatic efforts between Russia and the US.
