Navigating Peace Efforts: Ukraine Proposes Instant Ceasefire amidst Ongoing Attacks, Opposed by Russia

In an unexpected move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed an immediate 30-day ceasefire via his Telegram channel amidst continuous Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure.

"Yet another trick up Putin's sleeve: why wait till May 8 to halt the chaos? Human lives matter more than pomp and show. So, no delays. The ceasefire should commences forthwith, completely, and unrestrictedly - for a minimum of 30 days. This could serve as the nucleus for genuine diplomacy," Zelenskyy stated, expressing his dissatisfaction with the cycle of destructive peace talks.

Parallel to Zelenskyy, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba verified the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire through a series of social media posts.

"If Russia genuinely yearns for peace, the firing must cease at once. The wait until May 8 merely muddies waters. Instead, make it happen now, for any 30 days, proving it isn't just parade-bound," Kuleba wrote.

Ukrainian contributors stand ready to support a comprehensive, persistent, and full ceasefire, Kuleba affirmed.

These recent proposals came in reaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a ceasefire for Victory Day, from 00:00 on May 8 to 00:00 on May 11. It's essential to note that this isn't the first time Putin has proposed a ceasefire. Previously, he announced a ceasefire in Ukraine up until April 20, with Zelenskyy pledging a reciprocal response. Later, Putin announced an Easter ceasefire, effective from 18:00 on April 19 to 00:00 on April 21.

However, Russia has shown reluctance toward Ukraine's proposed ceasefire, preferring to implement its own unilateral Victory Day ceasefire, scheduled from May 7-11, 2025[1]. The ongoing diplomatic standoff continues, with little in the way of meaningful dialogue between both parties.
