Putin Proposes 30-Day Truce Following Chat with Trump, Kyiv Conference

Putin offered a 30-day truce proposal to Ukraine.

In the wake of a phone call with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin is mulling a 30-day ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. This proposal, made in concert with European supporters Merz, Macron, Tusk, and Starmer who are currently in Kyiv, aims to initiate peace talks.

Ukraine, accompanied by its European allies, calls upon Russia to agree to an unconditional ceasefire commencing on Monday. Such a truce, asserted Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha on the X platform, could pave the way for constructive dialogue.

The joint visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Kyiv aims to show solidarity with Ukraine. According to Sybiya, the European leaders had a "thorough discussion" about "peace efforts" for Ukraine with Trump during their meeting.

Initially, France and Britain led a "coalition of the willing" in March, boasting participants such as Germany. This group primarily focuses on European contributions to a potential ceasefire and peacekeeping in Ukraine.

Europe Stands United, Threatens Sanctions

With their joint visit, the European leaders demonstrate their unwavering support for Ukraine. The demand for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire in the Ukraine war had already been proposed by Merz and his colleagues in a joint statement the previous evening. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also endorsed the demand on Saturday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, however, made Russia's agreement to a ceasefire contingent upon a halt to Western arms supplies to Ukraine in a television interview. He insisted that a ceasefire, given the alleged progress of Russian troops, would primarily benefit Ukraine.
