Putin and Trump to convene in Alaska for discussions on a Ukraine ceasefire agreement
In a much-anticipated meeting on August 15, 2025, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin gathered in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss a potential ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The summit, which included top advisors and officials from both sides, such as Steve Wickoff and Marco Rubio for Trump, and Sergey Lavrov for Putin, lasted several hours, involving complex negotiations. However, no formal deal or ceasefire was announced afterward.
The proposed ceasefire deal, as described by Trump, would involve territory swaps between Ukraine and Russia. Putin suggested a ceasefire, contingent on Kyiv withdrawing its forces from the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. However, no credible information has confirmed that a deal involving territorial swaps was proposed or agreed upon at this meeting. The talks appeared to be exploratory rather than conclusively resolving the conflict.
Trump claimed he prevented a global war between Ukraine and Russia, but it's unclear whether a Trump-Putin meeting can bring about a ceasefire, as Putin has resisted multiple calls from various parties for a ceasefire. Since the announcement, there has been no official statement from the Ukrainian government regarding its stance on the proposed territory swaps.
The Kremlin has confirmed the Putin-Trump summit in Alaska and has invited Trump to visit Russia after the meeting. European officials are skeptical about the viability of the proposed ceasefire, as Ukraine would be required to give up territory without Russia being obligated to do more than stop the fighting. The US administration has begun preparing for a summit with Putin following the talks with Witkoff.
The ceasefire, as described, would result in Russia gaining control over additional Ukrainian territory. The US and Bloomberg News have reported that the ceasefire would leave Russia in control of the Ukrainian territory it currently occupies. Tens of thousands of people have been killed since Moscow launched the invasion, with millions forced to flee their homes in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Artis Pabriks, former Latvian defense and foreign minister, views the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting as a diplomatic victory for Russia. Despite the lack of a concrete outcome on the Ukraine conflict, the meeting marked a significant step in international diplomacy. The future of the conflict remains uncertain, with both sides continuing to hold firm on their positions.
