Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin isn't interested in a truce. Instead, Putin seeks Ukraine's "complete subjugation," Zelensky told US broadcaster ABC in an interview. For Putin to back down, substantial pressure from the US and Europe is required.
Zelensky brushed off US President Donald Trump's characterization of the Ukraine conflict as a mere spat between kids. "We aren't playground brawlers," Zelensky underscored. "So, I call him a cold-blooded killer who's sneaked into the playground to slaughter the innocent."
Zelensky does not share Trump's viewpoint that an end to the war and Russia's concessions are achievable. "With all due respect to President Trump, but I think that's his personal opinion," Zelensky clarified. "I believe that Putin isn't yearning for peace. In Putin's warped mind, a resolution is unattainable without Ukraine's complete defeat. The Ukrainians grasp the Russian psyche better than Americans. After all, we've shared borders for centuries."
Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia under Turkish supervision have seen little progress so far. To date, agreements have only been reached on the exchange of war prisoners in two meetings—an agreement now in question.
