Joshua Kimmich's 100th national team appearance is set for the Nations League semi-final against Portugal. But it's Matthäus' 150-cap record he's really got his eye on. "A lot's gotta go right to break 150: Stay healthy, perform at a high level, got a coach who backs ya, and we gotta do better in tourneys than we have," the 30-year-old told "Kicker."
"150 caps for the German national team, that's somethin' else, man," Kimmich enthused about Matthäus' legendary status. He's set to make his milestone appearance on Wednesday in his hometown of Munich, leading the team as captain. The aim? Reach the Nations League final against Spain or France at the Allianz Arena four days later.
"A Big Freakin' Milestone"
100 caps on the national team? Not even on Kimmich's radar when he moved from the youth leagues to the pros. "At 18, they weren't sure if I'd even make it in the third league," he mused about his loan from VfB Stuttgart to RB Leipzig.
"100 caps on the national team - that's a big f**kin' milestone, man," Kimmich said, beaming with pride. It shows he's consistently delivered at a high level and remained fit for the past nine years.
Debuting in Augsburg before the 2016 Euros, Kimmich only has one major title under his belt—the 2017 Confederations Cup. "Post-2016 Euros, it was a tough run: Quarter-final exit at the 2024 Euros, 2018 World Cup, all the way to March 2025. Ain't nobody wantin' a negative vibe like that."
But Kimmich's got his sights set on the Nations League as a springboard towards "something even bigger," like the 2026 World Cup.
