Pursuing historic victory at Indy 500 as a 50-year-old racer: Helio Castroneves' quest.

Rewritten Article:

Get ready, racing fans! The legendary Helio Castroneves, now 50 years young, is gunning for more history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This May 25, in the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500, a win for Castroneves would give him an unprecedented five victories, tying him with A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears.

Despite three consecutive losses, Castroneves remains determined, viewing his age as just another mile on the road. "I'm like a brand new engine," he declares. "I feel ready to go. They say life starts at 50, so I'm ready to start again."

Castroneves, a previous Meyer Shank Racing driver, is set to race with the team once more this year, and if he clinches the win, he plans to return for a sixth title, hunger for a statue fuelling his ambition.

Although Meyer Shank Racing has yet to announce future races for Castroneves beyond the 2023 Indy 500, the team acknowledges the value of his on-track and off-track contributions.

After two decades with Team Penske, where he scored Indy 500 victories in 2001, 2002, and 2009, Castroneves moved to Penske's sports car program before securing a partial ride back in IndyCar with Meyer Shank Racing. His fourth Indy 500 win in 2021 marked a significant milestone for the team, paving the way for a full two-year stint.

Now, Meyer Shank Racing fields two full-time cars for Felix Rosenqvist and Marcus Armstrong, with Castroneves joining as a third entry at Indianapolis.

Rosenqvist finds himself eighth in the IndyCar standings, while Armstrong lags behind in 14th. Qualifying performances have gone up a gear this season, and the team has created a technical alliance with Chip Ganassi Racing to reap its benefits. The drivers share debrief sessions, even if Castroneves - known for his larger-than-life personality – tends to be more quiet during these sessions.

Ganassi drivers boast five Indy 500 wins, with Alex Palou, a consistent winner this season, hoping to add another. Palou has dominated IndyCar recently, taking home the last two championships and three of the past four.

The partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing has given Meyer Shank Racing a significant boost. "We have a different partnership now, which really helps," Castroneves explains. "I can see the difference, and I'm grateful we were able to make that happen."

Beyond this year's race, Castroneves plans to compete in the 2024 and 2025 Indy 500s, piloting the No. 06 entry for Meyer Shank Racing. In 2025, he will also be inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame on May 221.
