Sunday Showdown: Marlon Tapales Returns to the Ring
Get ready, fight fans! Former super-bantamweight kingpin Marlon Tapales is back in the ring this Sunday, April 27, 2025. He'll be squaring off against Indonesian boxer Jon Jon Jet for the World Boxing Council (WBC) International Silver super-bantamweight title at Venue 88 in Gen. Santos City.
Tapales, 33, has been keeping busy in preparation for another world title tilt later this year. After his 2023 unification bout loss against Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue, Tapales bounced back with a first-round KO against Thai fighter Nattapong Jankaew and followed it up with a unanimous decision victory over Indian Saurabh Kumar.
Meanwhile, Jon Jon Jet is stepping up to face his toughest test yet. The former WBC Asian Continental super-bantamweight champ, who won the belt with a fourth-round TKO of Thai Woraweth Nawanetiwong in 2023, is coming off a third-round stoppage of Nontachai Laksana last year.
Tapales sits at No. 2 with the WBC, No. 3 with the International Boxing Federation (IBF), and No. 5 with the World Boxing Association (WBA). He boasts a record of 39-4 with 20 KOs, while Jon Jon Jet sports a 15-1-1 record with 12 knockouts.
Co-featured on the card is world-rated Joey Canoy (23-5-2, 14 KOs), who'll battle Vietnamese Minh Phat Sam (10-5, 8 KOs) for the WBC International minimumweight strap.
The undercard includes Kevin Villanueva (5-1, 3 KOs) vs. Ramel Antaran (6-29-3), Criztian Pitt Laurente (13-0, 8 KOs) versus Alvin Lagumbay (14-9-1, 12 KOs), Cholo Alvarez (1-0) clashing with veteran Pablito Canada (8-27-6, 2 KOs), and newcomer Christopher Medina taking on Raylan Barcenas (0-1).
Mark your calendars for this action-packed event! The fight will start at 9:00 UTC (10:00 am BST). It's going down at Venue 88 in General Santos City after being rescheduled from Cambodia. Don't miss Tapales's anticipated return!
