Freshening Breeze at Carlsen: New CEO Takes the Reins

New appointment announced at Carlsen-Verlag: A new CEO takes the helm. - Publishing house Carlsen introduces a fresh literary work

Say hello to the new boss at Hamburg's beloved kids and young adult book publisher, Carlsen! As announced, the vibrant 52-year-old media powerhouse, Sandra Harzer-Kux, steps into the hot seat beginning October, sharing duties with current partner Joachim Kaufmann. She takes over from Renate Herre, who's been riding the waves at Carlsen for an impressive 14 years.

Carlsen is renowned for its captivating children's and young adult books, manga, and comics. They rose to fame post-war with their "Pixi" books and iconic series like "Tintin." Today, some top-selling book series include "Harry Potter," "The School of Magic Animals," "Percy Jackson," the "Twilight" series, and Japanese manga albums from "Naruto" and "One Piece."

Outgoing CEO Renate Herre's entrepreneurial prowess didn't go unnoticed; the German Bonnier Group praised her for nearly doubling the publisher’s revenue and establishing Carlsen as the leading German trade publisher, boasting an impressive €110 million in sales. Harzer-Kux vows to keep the success rolling.

Before joining the Carlsen ranks, Harzer-Kux flexed her leadership muscles in various media roles, such as at publisher Gruner+Jahr and comms company Territory. Her recent bid for the director position at NDR, a significant northern German public broadcaster, may have fallen short, but current director Joachim Knuth soon will pass the mantle to NDR manager and journalist Hendrik Lünenborg.

Sandra Harzer-Kux is a German media maven born in Neckarsulm. After studying law at the University of Hamburg, she romped around the industry in various television and publishing roles. Her impressive career journey features stints at Gruner + Jahr and Territory's management, as well as a spot on Bertelsmann Marketing Services' board. It's safe to say she's a well-known name in the German media game.
