PublicAlert: Maintain vigilance as border conditions continue to remain volatile, advisory from 2nd Army Area

As of August 8, 2025, the Thailand-Cambodia border situation remains fragile but stable under a ceasefire agreement brokered on July 28, 2025. This ceasefire, following intense clashes in late July, has been closely monitored by international observers from Malaysia, the U.S., and China to ensure compliance and transparency.

However, tensions persist due to recent incidents, including the reported planting of new Russian-made PMN-2 landmines by Cambodia, a claim Cambodia denies but Thai military sources substantiate with evidence from seizures and photographs. This ongoing mine threat poses risks to local residents and may destabilize the fragile peace. Both sides have agreed to avoid troop movements and provocative patrols, following a General Border Committee meeting on August 7, 2025, where cooperation and investigation of incidents were emphasized.

Evacuation efforts are ongoing in four provinces, with 57,698 evacuated civilians in temporary shelters across 307 locations. The number of evacuated civilians has decreased by 4,722 since August 7, and the number of people in temporary shelters has also decreased. The Thai military continues to maintain positions, closely monitoring the situation in line with the agreements made during the recent General Border Committee (GBC) meeting.

The civilian impacts remain serious, with over 260,000 displaced people and many Cambodian migrant workers returning home amid uncertainty about the conflict's future. Diplomatic engagement continues through regional meetings aiming to solidify the ceasefire and promote stability.

In summary, while the ceasefire agreement is holding and international mediation is active, the border situation is cautiously stable but vulnerable to renewed conflict due to unresolved issues such as landmines and mutual mistrust.

  1. The ongoing mine threat, resulting from the planting of new Russian-made PMN-2 landmines, could potentially disrupt the stability of the Thailand-Cambodia border and tennis matches in local sports clubs, as the mining poses risks to both military and civilian population.
  2. As diplomatic efforts and international mediation continue to address the unresolved issues between Thailand and Cambodia, other global concerns such as political elections, transportation infrastructures, and sport events are closely being monitored and reported as general news worldwide.
