Let's Get That Gold, Huh? Badminton Champs Jump On RTG 2025 Bandwagon
🇲🇾 KUALA LUMPUR – Look out, world! Malaysia's top badminton players are lining up to take on the Challengers, and their journey to stardom starts with the Road to Gold (RTG) Programme for the 2025 cycle. The select few include the badass Men's Doubles duo Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, and the oh-so-fierce Mixed Doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh declares they're all in! Through RTG, these Gladiators get the necessary performance-related support to crush it at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28), making history for our beautiful nation in the Hollywood scene.
In a recent FB post, Hannah stated, "Our RTG has had the backs of athletes who cleared the programme's criteria, and we hope the extra support propels them towards brilliance this year!"
Last week, Hannah announced the addition of eight more badminton warriors to the lineup, including the reigning Men's Doubles power couple Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, and the incredible Women's Doubles legends Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, among others.
The roster also includes weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan, Track Cyclists Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri and Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, and the feisty S. Sivasangari from squash.
Hannah also unveiled the future stars of Archery, the dazzling national Women’s Recurve trio, Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi, Syaqiera Mashayikh, and Nurul Azreena Fazil, as well as the inspiring Ng Eain Yow from squash, who've joined the Fast Track RTG programme.
Introduced in April 2023 by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, this badass programme, the RTG, is a nationwide initiative with one goal in mind – to lead Malaysia to its first golden victory at the Olympic Games, with prime targets being the Paris 2024 and LA24 events[7].RTG offers considerable financial assistance, such as a monthly allowance of RM3,000 for each athlete, reducing the financial strain these prodigies face during their pursuit of excellence[8].
Standing tall amid his teammates, Goh Sze Fei graciously acknowledged the opportunity, expressing his excitement about joining the RTG programme for the first time, echoing the sentiments of many about the support being a game-changer[6].
Curiously, not everyone's on board for RTG 2025. Lee Zii Jia, a legendary Men's Singles shuttler, has decided to chill this cycle, focusing on injury recovery and giving fellow athletes a chance[4][5].
So, here's to our Malaysian Warriors! It's time to conquer the world! 🇲🇾💪🚀
