Public Safety Measures for Kiel Week 2025: Ensuring Crowd Security and Well-being for Attendees

Preparations for the Kieler Woche (21-29 June 2025), also known as KiWo, are in full swing, with over three million folks expected to flock to Kiel. Given the scale of the event and the myriad challenges that come with it, a key question arises: How can one of Germany's largest folk festivals be made secure?

Let's break it down, shall we? The city has announced the measures they plan to implement to ensure safety at KiWo. According to Philipp Dornberger, head of the Kieler-Woche office, they've collaborated with the police to expand and adapt last year's security concept.

Here's a sneak peek at the security strategy:

  • Vehicle barriers on event areas: Heavy-duty Bigbags lined up at various locations in the city will protect visitors, using a mix of fixed and mobile barriers, heavy access barriers, and modern bollards. This measure minimizes the risk of vehicular attacks, a concern echoed in recent incidents in Magdeburg, Liverpool, or Munich.
  • Increased police presence: Depending on the situation, more uniformed officers will be deployed in the area than in previous years, bolstering visibility and enhancing the sense of security in the city. The Kieler police will be supported by neighboring police headquarters and the riot police.
  • Cameras monitor visitors: As in 2024, the organizers are again relying on surveillance cameras across the entire area. With a total of eleven camera towers, the masses will be watched over. The combined live footage will be observed in a so-called "situation center" to manage crowds more effectively.
  • Ban on weapons and knives: According to the regulation, there's a strict ban on weapons and knives in public events in Schleswig-Holstein, including public transport. This means that all types of weapons and knives are forbidden throughout the entire area of the Kieler Woche and the paths in between. To enforce this, the police will increase random checks.

Stabbings have been a topic of concern in public security debates recently. In a chilling turn of events, several people were injured last week in a series of knife attacks in the Kieler district of Gaarden. A suspect is now in police custody. With this in mind, the police are placing a significant emphasis on preventing such incidents at KiWo.
