Public opinion overwhelmingly backs Brosius-Gersdorf for the position of constitutional judge
A new survey conducted by the Forsa institute for Stern magazine has revealed that a majority of Germans oppose calls for Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf to withdraw her candidacy for the Federal Constitutional Court.
The survey, conducted on July 17 and 18, 2024, collected data from 1,000 people. Among the key findings, a clear majority of 57 percent of respondents rejected calls for Brosius-Gersdorf's withdrawal.
Support for Brosius-Gersdorf's candidacy is particularly high among women, with 60 percent expressing their support. A majority of men, 54 percent, also rejected the withdrawal of the judicial candidate.
The public debate about the gender issue in the dispute surrounding Brosius-Gersdorf's candidacy has been controversial. However, the survey did not provide any information from 19 percent of the participants, which may have influenced the overall results.
Among supporters of the CDU and CSU, only 23 percent are in favor of withdrawal, while 59 percent reject it. This is in stark contrast to the AfD, where 55 percent support withdrawal, while 28 percent oppose it.
Supporters of the SPD, the Green Party, and the Left Party also expressed their opposition to Brosius-Gersdorf's withdrawal. Among SPD supporters, 82 percent oppose the withdrawal, while among Green Party supporters, 84 percent do so. Among supporters of the Left Party, 74 percent oppose the withdrawal.
The controversy surrounding Brosius-Gersdorf's candidacy stems from allegations of plagiarism and controversial positions on abortion and possible COVID-19 vaccine mandates. These issues have caused significant opposition within the Union, leading to the withdrawal of her candidacy amid doubts about achieving the required two-thirds majority in the Bundestag.
However, only 24 percent of respondents support a voluntary withdrawal of Brosius-Gersdorf, indicating that many Germans believe she should remain a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court. The survey results underscore the divided opinions on this contentious issue in German politics.
