Public Interaction with Political Candidates
In the heart of Koblenz, the Senior Citizens' Council recently hosted a citizen's dialogue, bringing together the incumbent mayor, David Langner, and the CDU candidate, Ernst Knopp. The event, held at the JUBÜZ on the Carthusian, was attended by approximately 100 visitors eager to gain insights into the candidates' future plans and positions.
Heinz-Günther Borck, the chairman of the Senior Citizens' Council Koblenz, moderated the event. The dialogue, lasting 2.5 hours due to active audience participation, covered a wide range of topics, including traffic, housing, volunteering, security, health, education, and skilled worker initiatives.
Ernst Knopp presented a vision for Koblenz, emphasising the importance of considering all interests holistically. His vision encompassed security, housing construction, health (including doctors and digitization of healthcare), education, kindergartens, and attracting skilled workers. Knopp also criticised the city's low ranking in the municipal monitoring and expressed a desire to focus on housing construction and digitization.
David Langner discussed past achievements and future action fields, highlighting successful efforts in traffic, housing, and volunteering. However, he also acknowledged the tight budget situation, emphasising the need for good communication with independent authorities.
The audience asked questions about various issues, including barrier-free access, low-cost cultural offerings, pedestrian signals, meeting spaces for neighbourhood initiatives, cycling infrastructure, and future prospects. Prof. Borck thanked the candidates and guests in the name of the Senior Citizens' Council for their active participation.
Koblenz's public transportation system is well-positioned, with a cheap daily ticket price of 5.50€. The city's senior citizens, who make up over 28% of the city's population, are actively represented by the Senior Citizens' Council, which advocates for the concerns of older citizens.
