The Anti-Corruption Agency in Almaty, Kazakhstan, has been working tirelessly to combat corruption in the city, as evidenced by recent developments. The head of the agency, Alik Shpеkbaev, stated that they have around 80,000 anti-corruption activists and volunteers, working together to address the issue.

In a significant move, the agency has established a new Anti-Corruption Service within the National Security Committee (NSC). This integration of anti-corruption functions with analytical, operational, and technical capabilities aims to address both the symptoms and root causes of corruption comprehensively and systematically.

The key goals of these efforts include elevating anti-corruption efforts to a new strategic level, developing and implementing a step-by-step action plan, and ensuring cooperation with government bodies and oversight agencies. The legal framework is also being drafted to support the new anti-corruption structure.

In parallel, the "Adaldyk Alanı" (Honest Square) project has been initiated as a grassroots and civil society engagement initiative. The project aims to promote transparency, ethical business practices, and anti-corruption compliance in Almaty. It focuses on fostering legal and ethical standards, supporting whistleblower protection mechanisms, and building tools and platforms adaptable to regional contexts for compliance and integrity.

The project also encourages collaboration among civil society, small and medium businesses, public institutions, and compliance professionals. It participates in networks such as the Central Asian Business Integrity Network (CABIN), emphasizing peer learning, cooperation, and practical approaches to enhance anti-corruption compliance and business ethics in the region.

The Anti-Corruption Agency recently held an open dialogue with the public, attended by Yerzhan Babakumarov, Deputy Akim of Almaty city, Igor Rogov, Deputy Executive Director of the Fund of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and other heads of state bodies, NGOs, media, public figures, rectors of higher education institutions, and leaders of project offices.

During the event, speakers emphasized the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures through timely and coordinated actions. The principle of inevitable punishment was highlighted as important, and public figures shared their views on anti-corruption work, including through the lens of political modernization and democratization.

Ainur Sabitova, the new project office leader, noted new goals for the 'Adaldyk Alanı' project this year, including an analysis of corruption risks in local executive bodies and socially important sectors. The current anti-corruption initiatives in Almaty city showcase a multi-layered strategy combining government enforcement through the Anti-Corruption Service embedded in the NSC and inclusive, community-oriented platforms like "Adaldyk Alanı" to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in Almaty.
