Fiery Fracas Continues in Serbia: Anti-Regime Protest Escalates

Southeast Europe's hotspot, Serbia, is at it again with another day of ruckus in the aftermath of a divisive court demonstration. Protesters in Novi Sad, the northern city, were met with pepper spray, shoves, and intense shove-offs as they clamored for the discharge of a gang of activists tossed in the slammer for nearly a month due to suspected anti-government shenanigans.

The dust kicked up on Thursday when riot control squads dished out pepper spray to protesters rallying for the release of imprisoned activists. Matters intensified further in Kraljevo during a local municipal assembly session, while tensions perked in Nis, where disturbances are expected during a gathering orchestrated by a controversial character.

All the hullabaloo kicked off back in March when secretly recorded conversations of the pack of provocateurs plotting supposed anti-state actions were broadcast on pro-government TV in the region. The miscreants found themselves snapped up by the long arm of the law soon after.

The Novi Sad uprising started post a deadly calamity on Nov 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy at the train station broke loose and crumbled, causing the deaths of sixteen citizens. It stirred a wave of discontent among the populace, who accuse the government of corrupt dealings linked to significant infrastructure projects, setting the stage for a massive rally in the capital, Belgrade, attended by hundreds of thousands.

Livid citizens, angry over the unending political strife, have been needling populist President Aleksandar Vucic and challenging his rule. They claim he exercises an iron fist, exerts pressure on the media, and narrows democratic freedoms. Yet, Vucic vows Serbia's entry into the European Union while tightening relations with Russia and China.

Vucic showed up at Russian President Vladimir Putin's Victory Day military parade in May, stirring up some friction with the EU. Lawyers for the enslaved activists maintain that the charges presented are based on questionable wiretapping findings and lack hard evidence of any impending coup plot. A high school professor amongst the cavalcade of inmates has been shifted to a hospital in Belgrade following a hunger strike.
