PSG secures a triumphant start in the Champions League, partially due to a stunning performance by Kvaratskhelia
In a dominant display of football, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Atalanta in their latest Champions League match. The Italian side, who had started the Serie A campaign unbeaten, suffered a setback with the departure of top scorer Ademola Lookman and the loss of their coach.
The contest began with PSG taking the lead early, as Marquinhos scored inside three minutes, marking his first Champions League goal in four years. Kvaratskhelia added to the tally in the 39th minute, before Nuno Mendes scored another goal early in the second half.
PSG's offensive prowess was on full display, with Mendes' goal being disallowed due to a save by goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Hakimi's effort was turned onto the outside of the post after a Ruiz back-heel, but the European champions continued to press.
Atalanta struggled to find their footing, taking almost 20 minutes to muster a shot of their own. Despite the efforts of Joao Neves, who had to come off injured before the hour mark, the Italian side had no answer for PSG's relentless attack.
PSG were awarded a penalty just before the interval, but Barcola's kick was poor and saved. However, the French side continued to push forward, and Goncalo Ramos secured the victory with a goal in the final moments of the game, adding a fourth goal in stoppage time.
PSG's star forwards Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue were unavailable due to injury, but Senny Mayulu, a 19-year-old forward, played at center-forward and scored the last goal in last season's final against Inter Milan.
Luis Enrique's team proved far too strong for Atalanta, with Joao Neves' injury adding to Atalanta's woes. Atalanta had rejected offers from Bayern Munich and Inter Milan for Ademola Lookman, but the transfer had not yet been completed as of the last updates.
The victory keeps PSG at the top of Group H, with Atalanta struggling to find their form without their key players. The next round of matches will be crucial for both teams as they look to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
