Stunning Club-WM Upset: Botafogo Downs PSG, Tops Group B!
PSG encounters setback against Botafogo; Atletico regains momentum
Pasadena, CA - In a shocking turn of events, Brazil's Botafogo thrashed French giants Paris Saint-Germain by a score of 1-0 (1-0) in the Club World Cup, taking the lead in Group B with six points. The Champions League winners, Paris, find themselves in second place with three points, level with Atlético Madrid, who staged a stunning comeback after their 0-4 drubbing by Paris in the opener, trouncing Seattle Sounders 3-1.
Showing nose-to-nose grit, Botafogo defended tenaciously against PSG's flashy squad, which saw several rotations throughout the starting lineup. Captain Marquinhos, midfielders João Neves and Fabián Ruiz, left-back Nuno Mendes, and winger Ousmane Dembélé were all conspicuous by their absence.
Nine minutes before the break, the Copa Libertadores champion struck gold: After a turnover and a slide pass into the box, Igor Jesus left two PSG defenders trailing, slipping a deflected shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for the opener. The remainder of the second half was a grim spectacle, with Paris barely posing a threat.
Though the French side held a clear advantage, they suffered their first defeat in seven games. PSG can still advance to the knockout stage with a win over Seattle in their final group contest. Botafogo only needs a single point against Atlético, while Madrid needs three.
Atlético clinched their spot with an impressive victory against Seattle. Pablo Barrios led the charge, notching two stunning goals for the 1-0 lead (11') and the 3-1 finale (55'). Ex-Borussia Dortmund star Axel Witsel extended the advantage with a rebound in the 47th minute, before Albert Rusnak momentarily equalized in the 50th minute.
