PSG and Tottenham Hotspur to kick off European campaign in the UEFA Super Cup opener
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have etched their name into the history books as the first French club to win the UEFA Super Cup, following a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over debutants Tottenham Hotspur after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The match, held on August 13, 2025, at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, was a tense affair, with Tottenham Hotspur leading 2-0 until the 85th minute. However, PSG mounted a late comeback, with Lee Kang-in scoring in the 85th minute and Gonçalo Ramos equalizing in stoppage time.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, PSG converted four penalties in a row, with Nuno Mendes scoring the decisive penalty. Unfortunately for Tottenham Hotspur, they missed two penalties, securing the victory for the French champions.
The encounter marked the first time both teams had appeared in the Super Cup. PSG, who had won the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League, were pitted against Tottenham Hotspur, winners of the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League.
Ahead of the match, several key players were set to return to the PSG squad after suspension, including Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez. On the Tottenham side, left-back Destiny Udogie was a doubt for both the Super Cup and the Premier League opener against Burnley on Saturday, while Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin were injured and unavailable.
The Super Cup victory was a significant milestone for PSG, who had also won their first Champions League title in the 2024-25 season, defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. However, their domestic campaign resumed against Nantes this weekend, providing an opportunity to add more silverware to their collection.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are still reeling from a disappointing 17th-place Premier League finish last season, which led to the sacking of manager Ange Postecoglou. The team is also without James Maddison, who is out for a long-term absence due to tearing his ACL in preseason. Dominic Solanke is still recovering from preseason setbacks, leaving the team short-handed.
As for PSG, their manager Luis Enrique will be aiming to guide the team to even greater heights, with the UEFA Super Cup just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season for the French giants.
