PSG Acquires Lucas Chevalier from Lille; Speculation Surrounding Gianluigi Donnarumma's Departure Persists in Ligue 1 Transfers
Paris Saint-Germain Sign Lucas Chevalier as Gianluigi Donnarumma Edges Closer to Manchester City
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have bolstered their goalkeeping ranks with the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille in a deal worth up to €55m. The French international goalkeeper has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, marking a significant move for the Ligue 1 champions.
Meanwhile, Gianluigi Donnarumma's future at PSG appears to be uncertain. The Italy international is likely to depart the club this summer, with Manchester City emerging as the frontrunners to secure his services. Reports suggest that City are preparing to sign Donnarumma as a replacement for Ederson, who is expected to join Galatasaray.
Donnarumma's agent has criticised PSG's treatment of the goalkeeper, suggesting that legal action might be considered. The agent also mentioned that only a Premier League club could meet PSG’s asking price, reportedly around €50 million, for the goalkeeper who will become a free agent next summer.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Donnarumma has expressed his disappointment at being forced out of PSG, having been dropped from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup. His departure is expected to pave the way for Chevalier to take over as the club's number one goalkeeper.
Chevalier, who prevented 9.6 goals via his shot-stopping as Lille finished fifth, expressed his excitement at wearing the PSG shirt with passion and ambition. He also took the time to thank PSG's chairman, club advisor, and coach for securing his transfer.
The initial fee for Chevalier is €40m, with a further €15m due in add-ons. The deal comes as PSG prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, before visiting Nantes for their Ligue 1 opener four days later.
Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with Donnarumma, but it appears that City are in pole position to secure his signature. A return to Serie A with Inter Milan is also a possibility for the Euro 2020-winning goalkeeper.
Last season, Donnarumma conceded 2.9 more goals than anticipated based on the strength of his opponents' finishing. Excluding penalties and own goals, he conceded 24 Ligue 1 goals from shots with an expected goals on target (xGoT) value of 21.1.
As PSG look to the future with Chevalier in goal, they will be hoping for a strong start to the new season, both domestically and in Europe. With the transfer window still open, it remains to be seen if there will be any further moves from the club.
Lucas Chevalier's arrival at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) not only strengthens their goalkeeping department but also emphasizes the importance of sports in maintaining a team's health and competitiveness, particularly in European leagues, as demonstrated by his impressive performance at Lille.
Meanwhile, Gianluigi Donnarumma's potential departure from PSG may open up opportunities for other Premier League clubs interested in his services, given his agent's assertion that only a Premier League club could meet PSG's asking price.
