Provocative Opera 'Sancta' Challenges Audiences at Stuttgart State Opera

Stuttgart State Opera presents 'Sancta', a provocative and thought-provoking opera by Florentina Holzinger, from October 3 to 5 and November 1 to 2. The opera, which explores societal issues like gender inequality, has sparked debate and controversy, leading to 18 first aid incidents at its premiere. Conducted by Marit Strindlund, 'Sancta' combines nudity, references to Christ's wounds, and mixed musical styles to challenge audiences and reclaim women's place in church history.

Conductor Marit Strindlund was invited by intendant Viktor Schoner to lead 'Sancta', Holzinger's first opera work. Strindlund was drawn to the piece's 'completely new form of stage art', finding its 'uncertainty' engaging. She described the opera's harsh images as necessary to maintain energy and spark debate in an interview with Esslinger Zeitung. Strindlund had to adapt to the unusual images, mixed musical styles, and unconventional working methods for 'Sancta', which is based on Paul Hindemith's 'Sancta Susanna'.

The opera uses nudity and references to Christ's wounds to explore themes of pain, redemption, and artistic expression. It aims to inform, criticize, entertain, and spark debates about societal issues such as gender inequality. Despite the controversy, remaining tickets for October performances are available, with November dates sold out.
