Farmers in Heidekreis Region Take a Stand Against Government Policies
Farmers in the regions of Germany are protesting against government policies that they believe are pushing them to the brink of financial ruin. Among the key figures supporting these protests are the Hankemeyer family, who have a long history of involvement in agriculture.
Pastor Frank Blase has expressed his understanding and support for the farmers' cause, and the entire Hankemeyer family, including Doris, Christoph, Stefan, and Markus, have thrown their weight behind the protests. Doris Hankemeyer, chairwoman of the Landfrauen, is a key organizer in the movement.
The farmers' main grievances revolve around restrictions on the use of plant protection products and cuts to area premiums. These measures, they argue, are making it difficult for them to invest for the farmers insurance next generation. Steffen Hartig, a farmer from Steinbeck, attended the Landvolk Heidekreis general assembly with his father and son, and his son has participated in protests in the municipality and Winsen.
Hartig's business, which includes pig farming and potato growing, is particularly affected by the agricultural diesel costs due to the need for multiple sievings to harvest high-quality potatoes. He is frustrated with the restrictions and requirements at the federal and EU levels, which he feels lack creativity and reliability.
Doris Hankemeyer expresses her frustration with the pricing of milk, stating that consumers want to buy it cheaply, but the work remains the same regardless of quality. The Hankemeyers are also frustrated with the injustices in the pricing of milk, regardless of whether it is organic or conventionally produced.
The farmers reject the notion that the agricultural diesel subsidy is a subsidy and feel that the cuts are a random austerity measure to plug the budget hole. They argue that since they don't use public roads with tractors, the taxation is not appropriate.
The farmers do not want to target those who support them and have been holding "slow-driving" demonstrations with tractors in the regions bank region. Katja Kunick, from the Landberatung, expressed her gratitude to these farmers at the Landvolk Heidekreis general assembly.
In a show of solidarity, many farmers in the Heidekreis region have been assisting with sandbagging and other tasks during the past four weeks, a time typically quieter on farms. The farmers' protests are not just about cuts to agricultural diesel subsidies, but also about federal government restrictions that have pushed many farmers over the edge.
Stefan Hankemeyer continues to run the family farm, while Markus Hankemeyer operates a combined heat and power plant. Senior Otto Hankemeyer participated in a demonstration over 40 years ago, when Bonn was still the federal capital.
The farmers in the Heidekreis region are hoping for a change in government policies that will allow them to continue their livelihoods and provide for their families. They are not alone in their fight, as the entire community stands with them in their quest for fairness and justice.
