Proud Boys Sue for $100 Million: Alleging Corrupt Prosecution in Capitol Riot Case
Capital Riot Aftermath: Proud Boys Seek $100 Million in Compensation - Proud Boys asserting a claim for $100 million in compensatory and punitive damages.
Here's a inside scoop on the Proud Boys' latest move!
Following the Capitol riot orchestrated by allies of ex-President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, these supporters now claim to be victims of a biased and politically-driven prosecution. The plaintiffs argue that the prosecution aimed to reprimand political supporters of the former President.
Among the plaintiffs is none other than former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who faced a 22-year prison sentence for his role in the Capitol riot. Tarrio, who was controversially pardoned by Trump upon his return to the White House last January, is one of over 1500 Capitol rioters recenting jail time.
In their newly lodged lawsuit, the five Proud Boys assert that the justice system was manipulated following the Capitol chaos for the purpose of "punishing and suppressing political allies of President Trump." They level accusations of fabricated evidence, witness intimidation, breaches of attorney-client communication privileges, and espionage on their trial strategy.
Interestingly, just last May, the Trump administration reached a pre-trial settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt, the woman shot by police during the Capitol attack. Babbitt's family is due to receive $5 million (4.4 million euros).
Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to halt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's election victory in the 2020 presidential race. Prior to the attack, Trump had encouraged his supporters to march to the Capitol. This chaotic turn of events left around 140 police officers injured and resulted in the ransacking of offices, with numerous legislators forced into hiding due to fear of the attackers.
