In the heart of Düsseldorf, a demonstration titled "Defend Humanity - Stop the Massacre in Gaza!" is set to take place on Friday, June 27th, starting at 7 PM from the DGB House on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. This event, organised by various organisations, aims to express global concern over the ongoing humanitarian and political crisis in Gaza.

The conflict between Israel and Gaza, which intensified after October 7, 2023, has led to a devastating situation in the Gaza Strip. Most of the region lies in ruins, with civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and homes destroyed. The organisations participating in the demonstration are criticising the "crimes against humanity" in Gaza, where over 56,000 deaths have been reported, including thousands of children.

The Green Youth Düsseldorf, one of the organisers, stands for the unassailable right of Israel to exist and for the end of the terrible war in Gaza, fighting for the human rights of all people. However, they condemn the attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, but argue that it does not justify the systematic destruction of Palestinian life or the decades-long occupation.

The German government is under fire for continuing to supply weapons to Israel, a decision that has been met with widespread criticism. The coalition accuses the Israeli government of using hunger as a deliberate weapon of war in Gaza, a claim that has been echoed by human rights organisations like Amnesty International, which is participating in the demonstration.

The situation in Gaza is dire. Approximately 800,000 Palestinians face displacement and starvation risks. UN officials warn that Israel’s plan to defeat Hamas by establishing an alternative civilian administration risks "another dangerous escalation" with broader regional destabilization. The conflict has also exacerbated tensions beyond Gaza, involving Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iranian-backed groups, and missile attacks from Yemen's Houthis.

Pope Leo has reminded the international community of their moral responsibility to stop the tragedy of war in Gaza. Hubert Ostendorf, founder and CEO of fiftyfifty, has warned that Israel's actions in Gaza are creating a human tragedy and a political catastrophe. The federal government, while declaring solidarity with Israel, remains silent about the massacres of the Palestinian population, with criticism dismissed as anti-Semitic.

The demonstration, which will proceed to the Oberbilker Market, is a call for peace and an end to the violence in Gaza. It reflects the global response to the conflict's humanitarian and political crisis, with protesters often expressing solidarity with Palestinians or calling for peace and an end to violence. The hope is that this demonstration will be a step towards renewed peace efforts and a two-state solution.

  1. The ongoing humanitarian and political crisis in Gaza, driven by war-and-conflicts, has resulted in migration as over 800,000 Palestinians face displacement and starvation risks.
  2. The prolonged crisis has also had consequences in the realm of crime-and-justice, with human rights organisations such as Amnesty International accusing the Israeli government of using hunger as a deliberate weapon of war, a claim echoed by general-news sources.
  3. Despite this, politics seems to be dominating the response to the Gaza situation, with the German government facing criticism for continuing to supply weapons to Israel, and the federal government dismissing critical voices as anti-Semitic, thereby politicizing the ongoing tragedy in Gaza.
