In a surprising turn of events, Samir Xaud, the current president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), has ordered a halt to the production of the red away jersey for Brazil's national football team. This decision comes amidst a political controversy that started in April and gained momentum in May 2025.

The proposed away jersey colour, red, is associated with the Workers Party of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. However, Samir Xaud has stated that he is against the idea of a red shirt, but not for political reasons. He believes that only the colours of the Brazilian flag (blue, yellow, green, and white) should be used for the jerseys.

The controversy surrounding the away jersey colour began under Samir Xaud's predecessor, Ednaldo Rodrigues, who started the production of the red jersey. This decision has sparked debates among the team's supporters and political enthusiasts, with some expressing concerns about the lack of "political sensitivity" in the decision-making process.

Notably, Paulo Vinicius Coelho, a renowned sports columnist, has voiced his concerns about the issue. He referred to the Workers Party, which is red, as the party that has dressed politics up in yellow. Coelho also suggested that the red colour could be confused with another political party. However, he did not specify which party he believed could be mistaken for the red jersey.

In response to the controversy, Nike, the sports apparel company responsible for producing the jerseys, has accepted the decision to halt the production of the red away jersey. Instead, a blue shirt is being produced as the new away jersey for Brazil's national football team.

The team's home jersey remains yellow with green trim, reflecting the traditional colours of Brazil. Interestingly, these colours are also worn by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro at political rallies.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen what the final design of Brazil's away jersey for the upcoming tournament will be. However, one thing is certain: the decision to change the colour of the away jersey has sparked a lively discussion about the intersection of sports and politics in Brazil.
