Vice President JD Vance's Visit to Charlbury, UK, Met with Protests and Local Opposition

US Vice President JD Vance is currently on holiday in a rural region of southwest England, specifically in Charlbury, Cotswolds. However, his visit has been met with protests and local opposition.

Residents of Charlbury and groups like the Stop Trump Coalition have expressed their disapproval of Vance, who is associated with the Trump administration. A march took place in Charlbury on August 12, 2025, protesting against the Trump administration while Vance and his family were vacationing there. Around 60 activists and locals participated, carrying signs with messages like "Go Home", "Not Welcome Party", and "Sod Off".

Jake Atkinson from the Stop Trump Coalition spoke at the protest, citing US President Donald Trump's policies on immigration and the war in Gaza as reasons for local anger. Victoria Dawson, an artist from nearby Witney, also protested against Vance, stating he is immoral and causing damage around the world. Lou Johnson, a 75-year-old resident, expressed concerns about the heightened security invading the rural area he has lived in for 50 years.

The security measures have been disruptive to the locals, according to Phil Ball, a resident and cameraman. UK police and US security detail were present, blocking some roads and footpaths in the region popular with tourists. A black van with a meme image of Vance drove past the town earlier in the day. The image on the van depicted Vance as bald and bloated.

Staff at a nearby pub called The Bull reportedly staged a "staff mutiny," collectively refusing to work if Vance had a reservation, reflecting strong local opposition to his presence.

Residents of Dean, Vance's current location, were surprised by the heavy security, including a 20-car motorcade. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy hosted Vance at his country retreat in Chevening, Kent, last week.

Dawson mentioned that roads are being closed and police presence is high due to Vance's visit, which is not what locals expect or accept. Johnson also stated that the residents of the area stand up for what they believe in.

Atkinson also mentioned that the anti-Trump coalition would also turn out against the US president during his upcoming state visit in September. These events illustrate the tension between Vance's political affiliations and the sentiments of some residents in Charlbury during his visit.

  1. The Stop Trump Coalition's protest in Charlbury, UK, against Vice President JD Vance was driven by the coalition's disapproval of his association with the controversial politics and war-and-conflicts policies of the Trump administration, such as immigration policies and the war in Gaza.
  2. The general news on August 12, 2025, reported the local opposition to Vice President JD Vance's presence in the rural region of southwest England, with protests and signs carrying messages like "Not Welcome" and "Sod Off," reflecting public sentiments against his political affiliations and perceived negative impact on global issues.
