YAKUTSK, the folksy heart of Russia's cold as ice Sakha Republic, is heart-eyed emoji stirring some controversy. Here's the lowdown!
The top dog of Yakutia's "Yabloko" party, Anatoly Nogovitsyn, is locked and loaded for a protest rally against the city's decision to axe the direct elections of Yakutsk's big cheese. But it's the cynical, insider journalist Vitaly 'Chainsaw' Obedin who's throwing some serious cold water on the parade.
"Dude, don't even bother," Obedin snarls in his Telegram. "They'll just pin something on someone. The secret service lollipops will have a field day! And who'll show up? A handful of worried folks and conspiracy theorists. That's just what the big wigs want!"
Obedin ain't buying it. He calls it "political marginalization lite," saying 'tactically,' this protest will just cast shadows over the ideas being fought for.
Nogovitsyn's got claws out and roars back in his Telegram, "And there you have it! No pecuniary or social risk so no need to engage, right? When people don't get off their butts, they give the green light to the suits. Even if it's just a smattering of protesters, at least they'll be there to say, 'Hell no, this is our right!'"
He adds, "Political activism is a result of action, not talk like Obedin's moonshine."
Obedin's flimsy excuse for saying "nothing will change" is just another lame reason to sit on your hands, according to Nogovitsyn.
So, what's the deal? Citizen activism or cozy bureaucracy shrugging off public outcry? You decide, folks! But remember: Apathy doesn't equal neutrality - it equals support for the status quo.
