Unrest in the USA: Nationwide Protests Against Trump's Immigration Policies Heighten
- Step into the Fray: Jump into the thick of things as protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policy sweep across the USA. After demonstrations in Los Angeles with hundreds of participants, people also took to the streets in San Francisco. As reported by local police, thousands of people protested in a mostly peaceful manner on Monday (local time), with minor incidents occurring only in the evening.
Protests escalating over Trump's immigration policies continue to multiply - Protests escalating over Trump's immigration policies are growing larger
While the East Coast metropolis of New York witnessed just dozens of protesters gather in the lobby of the Trump Tower, according to media reports, they made their voices heard, chanting "Bring them back," seemingly in reference to the deportation of migrants. Protests were also recorded in Santa Ana, California, Austin and Dallas, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, and Louisville, Kentucky. Although these protests were mostly peaceful, they resulted in a few clashes and numerous arrests, according to US media reports.
A Rocky Standoff
Protests against Trump's hardline immigration stance have echoed through the streets of Los Angeles for days. On Monday, police reportedly used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters, despite some friction, there appeared to be fewer clashes between police and demonstrators than in previous days, according to both the "New York Times" and the "Los Angeles Times."
The escalation in tension can be traced back to the enhanced deployments by the immigration agency ICE at the end of last week, which sparked the first protests. As reported by the agency, dozens of individuals were arrested in the raids. Critics claim that Trump's government is intentionally instilling fear and unrest with martial-looking measures.
Toeing the Republican Line
In contrast, Republican US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asserts that ICE employees, with the support of the National Guard, are simply implementing exactly what President Trump had promised during his campaign: the launch of the largest deportation program in American history.
Unbowed President Trump
President Trump refuses to back down in the face of protests. He recently ordered the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 regular military personnel to the West Coast metropolis, taking a highly unusual and controversial step of mobilizing this force without the consent of the local governor. Presently, approximately 1,700 National Guard soldiers are deployed in the Los Angeles area.
This marked the first time in decades that a US president has taken control of a state's National Guard without the consent of its governor. The situation may further escalate as Vice President JD Vance announced a tough crackdown in Los Angeles during the early hours of Tuesday, vowing to assist the FBI in pursuing violent criminals, restoring order, and aiding the immigration agency ICE in enforcing immigration laws. "President Trump will not back down," JD Vance wrote on the X platform, asserting that the government will not be intimidated by "lawlessness."
Trump's Defense
Donald Trump stands unwavering regarding the deployment of troops. He recently commented on the online platform Truth Social, "If I hadn't sent the troops to Los Angeles in the past three nights, this once beautiful and magnificent city would now be burning to the ground." He likened the scenario to the devastating fires that swept through the Greater Los Angeles area earlier this year.
Accusations of Abuse of Power
California's Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, has accused Trump of "abuse of power," stating that the U.S. government has crossed a red line. California has already filed a lawsuit against Trump's decision to take control of the state's National Guard without the state's consent. Newsom declared that he would also take legal action against the deployment of regular troops to California.
Criticism of Lack of Supplies
In another statement on X, Newsom criticized the fact that the first 2,000 National Guard troops arrived without food, water, or any specific orders, with only about 300 being actively involved in operations.
LA: A Test Case or a Provocative Measure?
The Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, perceives Trump's actions as a sort of "test case." She revealed at a press conference on Monday (local time) that Washington aims to see "what happens when the federal government intervenes and takes away the decision-making power from the state or city." Bass added that she doesn't want her city used as "an experiment." She believes that Trump's mobilization of the National Guard is an "intentional attempt to stir up unrest and chaos in our city." She wishes to make it clear to the White House that the mobilization of the National Guard is "a provocative measure."
