Protests Erupt in Los Angeles as Immigrants, Family Members, and Allies Vigorously Oppose Trump's Enforcement Measures
Protests Against Immigration Enforcement Sweep Across Los Angeles
In response to heightened immigration enforcement and the deployment of the National Guard, thousands of Angelenos gathered in demonstrations across the city over the weekend. Aisha Wallace-Palomares, a journalist, decided to report on these protests after hearing about mass raids across the city.
On Sunday, Wallace-Palomares documented a protest at City Hall in downtown Los Angeles where she saw a large, diverse crowd of thousands of people. The atmosphere was peaceful and empowering, with volunteers providing snacks, Gatorade, and bottled water to attendees.
The previous day, Wallace-Palomares observed protesters handing out personal protective gear such as water, masks, and milk near the Metropolitan Detention Center. Many protesters at the demonstrations were immigrants and their allies, showing solidarity against the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies.
One resident, Evelyn Melendez-Payne, attended a protest out of a need to cope with the heartbreaking images of ICE raids. She found the gathering peaceful and empowering. Iman Shervington, a resident of Pico-Union, expressed fear for the safety of her neighbours due to increased ICE activity and National Guard deployments in her community. However, she found hope in the solidarity that emerges in her community despite the unsettling presence of ICE and the National Guard.
Uyen, a local business owner in Silver Lake, participated in a demonstration and found it empowering and inspiring to see diverse young people advocating for their communities. For Uyen, protesting is a civic duty and she feels free to exercise her rights as a naturalized US Citizen.
However, Wallace-Palomares encountered a tense situation at City Hall on Sunday with the National Guard being close to protesters. US President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to Los Angeles to combat crime and immigration-related issues, despite California authorities not requesting this deployment. A US judge later ruled the deployment illegal.
Wallace-Palomares photographed protesters holding signs saying "ICE out of LA" and a Guatemalan flag near a bridge in downtown LA on Saturday. On Saturday, news broke about ICE raiding day laborers in the Home Depot parking lot in Highland Park, adding to the growing concerns of the community.
Gabriel*, another resident, has been protesting ICE since they were locking kids in cages during Trump's first term and was concerned about potential ICE activity in Highland Park. Despite the tensions, the protests continued to be a powerful display of resistance and solidarity.
