Title: Neuss: Restored Europa-Stele Stands Proud, Emblem of European Unity 🔥
Step into the heart of Neuss, Germany, where history and modernity collide stunningly! Today, January 12th, the city radiates pride as Mayor Reiner Breuer unveils the rejuvenated Europa-Stele at Friedrich-Ebert-Platz. This 6-meter-high artwork by local artist Peter Hermann Schütz has stood tall since European Day, 1984, serving as an essential historical marker.
Crafted from baked enamel steel, the Europa-Stele represents the union of the states that formed the European Community, a precursor to the EU. The "Spiral" comprises twelve individual elements, each symbolizing one of the founding twelve member states, arranged chronologically.
"The artwork represents a public declaration of Europe and European values – peace, international education, understanding, and diversity," said Mayor Breuer at the unveiling. He also highlighted the upcoming elections to the European Parliament on June 9th.
The stele bears the respective capital cities of eleven founding members: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Greece. Spain and Portugal, who joined officially in 1986, are included too. This magnificence stands as a testament to its era.
Europa-Stele serves as a beacon commemorating the European integration process and nurturing a shared European identity. Though specific historical records about the Neuss stele are scarce, its general significance transcends beyond local boundaries – encapsulating the essence of European unity.
